This fusion margarita is a great cocktail to celebration with on March 17, thanks to the addition of Irish Whiskey and the green food coloring that makes it so festive.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Ireland and I’m forever hearing about how Americans totally recreated St. Patrick’s Day for themselves. That is absolutely true, and maybe it’s not right to appropriate someone else’s holiday, but I think at this point we’ve made it so uniquely American, that it has taken on a whole new meaning.
So we don’t avoid green drinks on St. Patrick’s Day in the U.S.. We just understand that it’s entirely an American thing and enjoy it.
What is a Shamrock Margarita

Just like a typical margarita, you’ll need a very similar palate of ingredients. The biggest differences in this cocktail and a Mexican margarita is that we replace the tequila with Irish Whiskey and add a few drops of green food coloring.
You can use any Irish Whiskey you like for this cocktail. We have Jameson’s Irish Whiskey that we use to make Irish coffee, so that’s what I use.
Ingredients Needed for a Shamrock Margarita
Just like a typical margarita, you’ll need a very similar palate of ingredients. The biggest differences in this cocktail and a Mexican margarita is that we replace the tequila with Irish Whiskey and add a few drops of green food coloring.
- Fresh limes
- Cointreau
- Rim salt
- Ice
- Irish Whiskey (like Jameson’s)
- Green food coloring

How to Make an Irish Whiskey Margarita
The steps to make this cocktail are quite easy. It’s very similar to a margarita.
Combine the whiskey, lime juice, orange liqueur, agave syrup and food coloring with the ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously to chill.
Optional: Wet the rim of the margarita glasses and roll in salt or sugar.

Pour the cocktail into the glass. Garnish with lime wedge

- 2 ounces Irish whiskey
- 1 ounce lime juice, juice from 1 lime
- 1/2 ounce orange flavored liquor, such as triple sec or Cointreau
- 1/2 ounce agave syrup
- 3 drops green food coloring
- 1/2 cup ice
- Salt or sugar for the rim
- Lime wedge for garnish
Instructions
- Combine the whiskey, lime juice, orange liqueur, agave syrup and food coloring with the ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously to chill.
