Usually a margarita has tequila in it, along with lime juice and orange liqueur like Cointreau. This cocktail strays a bit from the norm. We love Mezcal and are always looking for new ways to enjoy it. So this Mango Margarita uses mezcal instead of tequila. We love mezcal in this spicy La Pina cocktail as well.

Another aspect of this cocktail that really kicks it up a notch is the addition of cayenne pepper. If you don’t like spicy things, this might not be for you – in which case you can just leave it out.
I only use a small sprinkle of cayenne in the drink and another in the rim salt. It doesn’t take much to impart the flavor and spiciness you’re looking for. When it comes to cayenne, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Spicy rim salt – You can make your own spicy rim salt by combining kosher salt with a sprinkle or two of ground cayenne pepper. I like this combination and it’s easy to make. You can also buy a premade rim salt, especially if you plan to make these cocktails often.
- Mango juice
- Lime juice – Freshly squeezed.
- Mezcal – Mezcal has a unique smoky flavor. It adds an extra flair to a cocktail that is usually sweet and sour. The smoky element makes it so much more complex. The smoky flavor goes really well with sweet fruit, like mango and pineapple.
- Agave syrup – This is an excellent drink sweetener. It is sweeter than sugar with a more neutral flavor than honey and slightly thinner in consistency.
- Ground cayenne pepper – If you don’t like spicy things, this might not be for you – in which case you can just leave it out.
What is Mezcal?
Mezcal is one of my favorite liquors because of its unique smoky flavor. It adds an extra flair to a cocktail that is usually sweet and sour. The smoky element makes it so much more complex.
You can learn all about Mezcal in this post. It’s made from agave that is roasted underground, which gives it a wonderful smokiness in both aroma and taste. The smoky flavor goes really well with sweet fruit, like mango and pineapple.

You can purchase a rim salt that’s made with sea salt, celery seed, black pepper, garlic, chile, and other spices. Or you can mix up your own.
I really like this bacon rim salt. The smoky bacon flavor and aroma pairs really well with Mezcal, so it’s perfect for this cocktail. The bacon salt also goes well with these smoky Mezcal cocktails.

It’s very important that, when salting the rim of the glass, you DON’T want ANY salt on the INSIDE of the rim. So after salting, turn the glass upside down and rub your finger around the inside of the rim to remove the salt. Otherwise, when you sip the cocktail any salt on the inside of the rim drips back into the glass and the last couple sips of your drink are an unpleasant sip of salty nastiness. This is a very common mistake of restaurants and bartenders who don’t know what they’re doing.
