Everyone loves sweet potato fries, so why not sweet potato chips? We think these are the perfect snacking chips to serve at a party. Their slightly sweet taste goes really well with beer, wine and cocktails. And I think everyone enjoys the uniqueness of a bowl of sweet potato chips.
How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips
Thinly slice the sweet potato (as thin as a regular potato chip), using a mandoline, if possible. Rinse the slices in cold water and pat dry. Some recipes encourage you to soak the slices for up to 20 minutes in water, but I don’t find that necessary. The outcome is the same, so save the time.

Preheat air fryer to 350°F (180°C). It only takes a few minutes to preheat, so you can do this while adding olive oil to the slices.
Lightly coat the slices with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. It doesn’t take much olive oil, just a very thin coating. Lay them out in a single layer in the air fryer. If you can’t fit them all without stacking them, then cook in batches, rather than crowd the basket.

Air fry at 350°F for about 10 minutes. After 5 minutes, shake the basket and space out the chips again. Watch the chips closely, checking every other minute, so they don’t burn and remove them as soon as a little bit of brown starts to appear on the chips. They might still be a little flexible; they’ll crisp as they cool.
Place on a cooling rack for a few minutes to cool and crisp up.

Tips for the Best Sweet Potato Crisps
You don’t have to spray the basket with cooking spray, since the potatoes have olive oil on them.

The cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your slices. They can take anywhere from 8-12 minutes to finish cooking. After 5 minutes start watching them closely, to avoid burning and remove as soon as some brown appears. They might still be a little flexible in the middle, but they’ll crisp up when cooled. If you’re not sure, take one out of the basket and allow it to cool for 15 seconds to see if it crisps properly. If not, continue cooking.
You can somewhat overlap the slices in the basket, but don’t pile them on top of each other or they won’t cook properly. Work in batches instead.
Don’t Have An Air Fryer?
If you don’t have an air fryer, I would really encourage you to look into getting one. It’s the kitchen appliance I use the most. It sits out on my countertop and I use it for nearly every meal. It’s a really super fast way to cook things without turning on the oven and it does a great job with things like chicken and pork chops, french fries and even making croutons for a salad.
There are so many great air fryers on the market today that you can buy, in many different sizes to fit your needs. If you’re cooking for just 1 or 2 people you probably want to stick with a smaller 3 qt size, while a larger family will want a larger 6+ quart size. The one I like best is the Ninja Air Fryer.

Oven Instructions
If you don’t have an air fryer, you can bake the sweet potato fries. Here are the oven baking instructions.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicon mat.
- Lightly coat the sweet potato slices with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Lay them out in a single layer on the sheet.
- Bake at 355°F for about 15-18 minutes. After about 13 minutes, start to watch the chips closely so they don’t burn and remove them as soon as a little bit of brown starts to appear on the chips. They might still be a little flexible; they’ll crisp as they cool.
- Place on a cooling rack for a few minutes to cool and crisp up.

I recently experimented with making crispy air-fryer sweet potato chips and decided to pair them with tahini for a unique twist. The result was absolutely delightful! The sweet potato chips turned out perfectly crisp and flavorful, with a hint of sweetness that complemented the creamy richness of the tahini dip. It was a satisfying snack that I’ll definitely be making again.
I’m happy to hear that they came out great for you. I will definitely try them with tahini next time. That sounds like a great combination.
