You’re going to have to practice restraint before mixing up this cocktail because it’s one of those drinks that you could gulp down before you even know it. The combination of Godiva chocolate liqueur and creme de cocoa with cream is so decadent.
Are Godiva and Creme de Cocao the Same?
This is a question I get asked often about this recipe. Godiva chocolate liqueur and creme de cocao are two different types of liquor. You need both of them for this recipe to have the robust chocolate flavor you expect.
Godiva chocolate liqueur is a sweeter, thicker syrup than the chocolate-flavored liquor that’s called creme de cocao.
If that isn’t confusing enough, keep in mind that there are also two different versions of creme de cocao – a clear one and a dark chocolate colored one. The clear one is, obviously, clear. You can use it in drinks that are clear or light colored. The dark version has caramel coloring added to it and it’s a bit heavier. They taste the same. For this cocktail, you can use either one that you can find or already have. I’ve used the dark version here.
Creme de cocao can be used in a Brandy Alexander, if you’re looking for more ways to use that bottle.

How to Make a Chocolate Martini
A martini is mostly made up of liquor, so it’s quite a strong drink. That’s why we use three different types of liquor in this cocktail. It’s Godiva (or another brand of chocolate liqueur), creme de cocao, and vodka. If you have vanilla vodka, you could use that instead if you want, for a bit of extra flavor.
If you don’t want to make such a strong drink, you could replace the vodka with more cream, or just leave it out.
To make the cocktail, first prepare the glass. Wet the rim of the martini glass with water and roll in the cocoa powder. This step is not strictly necessary, but I really like how extra decadent it looks.
Next, combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Strain into the martini glass. Top with a little shaved dark chocolate or a sprinkle of cocoa powder.
