My mom loves Terry’s chocolate orange balls. We used to buy her one every year when they came out in the fall. She’d eat one slice per night – so much restraint! You can’t really pull that off with these martinis. They are so good, you’ll be wanting a second one for sure.
The chocolate and orange flavors go so well together that you can’t really blame a person for wanting more. We love these and serve them with our favorite chocolate orange cake to really pile it on.
Ingredients You’ll Need
For this cocktail, you will need a few different types of liquor. It’s a bit heavy on the liquor, but you definitely won’t notice it while drinking (so be forewarned!). They go down easy.
- Vodka – I just use plain vodka like Smirnoff or Ketel One, but you can also use vanilla vodka
- Godiva chocolate liqueur – There are a few different versions like Mozart chocolate cream but Godiva is the best
- Creme de Cacao – We use the dark version in this recipe, not the white version
- Triple Sec – also Cointreau or another orange liquor is fine
- Orange simple syrup (see our recipe here)
- Ice
- Orange slice and chocolate syrup for garnish – Try these great chocolate dipped orange slices as a garnish.

How to Make Orange Simple Syrup
One of the key ingredients in this cocktail is the orange simple syrup. You don’t strictly have to have it, but I think it’s the difference between this recipe and others you’ll find on the internet. It makes it taste more like real oranges and it has a brightness and acidity that you can’t get from the orange liqueur alone.
We make orange simple syrup and use it over the span of a week or so to make more of these cocktails, because everyone loves them and we just can’t stop drinking it!
Don’t worry though, it’s simple to make it. You can follow our recipe here. It’s just sugar and water in equal parts, heated up on the stove top, with sliced oranges added in. You’ll need to cook it and cool it before you can make the cocktails though, so do keep that in mind when prepping.
How to Make The Cocktail
Get ready because this cocktail is so simple to make you won’t believe it. You’re going to need your cocktail shaker and jigger, plus some ice.
First things first, we need to dip the rim of a martini glass in chocolate syrup or drizzle the syrup inside the glass. Which one you prefer is up to you. I think it looks lovely on the rim of the glass. I sometimes even roll it in shaved chocolate after dipping it.
Combine all the ingredients in your cocktail shaker and fill it with ice. Shake vigorously until well chilled. Shake for at least 20-30 seconds. You want the drink to be nice and chilled when it goes into the glass.
Pour the cocktail into the martini glasses. Garnish with an orange slice, if you want. Very pretty!
