BBQ chicken sliders

Barbecue chicken sliders are a classic and popular dish perfect for outdoor gatherings, game days, or as party finger food. These delicious bite-sized sandwiches are easy to prepare and are a crowd-pleaser.

To make this even easier, you can use pre-shredded chicken or left over chicken. You just need to mix it with your favorite BBQ sauce, or make this easy 3-ingredient bbq sauce, pile it up on slider buns, add some cheese, and stick them in the oven.

They can be prepared in just 30 minutes. Although the chicken and BBQ sauce needs to be combined in a dish, everything else is prepared in a single baking pan. Very simple!

Ingredients You Need

Ingredients for shredded BBQ chicken sliders
  • Slider buns – For these sliders, I use King’s Hawaiian buns because they’re available just about anywhere. You can use whatever slider buns you like, however. Sometimes i even use the pretzel buns.
  • Chicken breast – Shredded chicken breast is best, but you can substitute chicken thighs. Use what you have on hand; it will taste just as good. My recipes are all about convenience and simplicity.
  • Chicken stock – If you’re cooking the chicken from raw, I like to cook it in chicken stock for more flavor. You can use water instead, if you want.
  • Salt – Make sure to season with enough salt to bring out the flavors.
  • BBQ Sauce – Use your favorite BBQ sauce. For me, that’s always Sweet Baby Ray’s.
  • Cheddar cheese – Shred your own or buy pre-shredded. You can also use slices if you want.
  • Butter – Melted butter is spread over the top for that extra pop of yumminess.

How to Make BBQ Chicken Sliders

Preheat the oven to 350˚F. Place the bottom of the slider buns into a 9×13” baking dish. If they don’t fit well, you can place them on a baking sheet instead.

Place the chicken stock and chicken breast in a pot over medium heat. Simmer until the chicken is cooked through. It takes about 15 minutes. You can check the internal temperature of the chicken with a meat thermometer to make sure it’s reached 165° F.

Transfer the chicken to a cutting board and let it cool for a few minutes. Use two forks to shred the chicken.

In a bowl, combine the shredded chicken and the BBQ sauce. Stir to incorporate it all together. Place mounds of the chicken on each bun. Top them with shredded cheese. Lay on the tops of the buns.

Topping the BBQ chicken with shredded cheese

Brush the tops of the buns with the melted butter and drizzle the rest over the top. You can skip adding the extra butter if you’re not keen on the added calories. It’s not necessary.

Cover them with foil and bake for 15 minutes.

Remove the foil from the pan and bake for another 10 minutes, or until tops are golden. Serve immediately.

Additional Helpful Tips

  • Choose a high-quality BBQ sauce that you like the taste of. You can use store-bought or homemade BBQ sauce for this recipe. I like to use Sweet Baby Ray’s.
  • For a quicker alternative, use shredded rotisserie chicken or leftover chicken breast.
  • Serve the sliders with extra barbecue sauce on the side for dipping. I also like to add cole slaw to them sometimes for extra crunch.
