Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients for pink hot chocolate
  • Whole Milk – Whole milk is the perfect creaminess for this drink. You can use 2% milk, but it won’t be as creamy.
  • White Chocolate – Buy good-quality white chocolate like Ghirardelli wafers; it makes a huge difference in the taste and texture.
  • Vanilla Extract – This adds a light vanilla flavor.
  • Sprinkle of Salt – Trust me, it’s helps brighten up the rich chocolate flavor.
  • Red Food Coloring – You can use pink or red, to get the perfect pink color to your hot chocolate.
  • Whipped Cream – I think this drink requires whipped cream. Add it if you like.
  • Pink Sprinkles – For garnish, I like to use these heart-shaped sprinkles.

How to Make Pink Hot Chocolate

Warm up the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat, just until it steams. Don’t boil it or it might break and curdle. You want it to be hot enough to melt the chocolate, but not scalding. Remove it from the heat.

saucepan with warming milk

Pour in the white chocolate and stir it with a silicon spatula until melted and smooth. It’ll take about 3-5 minutes. If the milk wasn’t hot enough and the chocolate isn’t melting, you can put it back on the heat for a few minutes until melted.

Stir in the vanilla extract, salt and food coloring. I use just a tiny drop of food coloring and that makes a nice light pink color. You can add as much or as little as you want to get the color you desire.

Pour the pink hot chocolate into a glass. I use a tall hot chocolate glass that can be used for so many other drinks and desserts. Top it with whipped cream and sprinkles, as you like. Be sure to serve it right away, because the whipped cream will melt right away.

Additional Helpful Tips

  • Make sure not to overheat the milk. White chocolate melts at around 98° F, so you want to heat the milk just enough to melt the white chocolate. You don’t want to scald the milk by accident.
  • Use good quality hot chocolate in this recipe. I always use Ghirardelli because it tastes great and has a nice smooth texture. I’ve used other white chocolate chips before and some have a greasy residue that’s not so appetizing.
  • You can use gel or liquid food coloring. Pink or red.
  • For a bit more holiday flavor, add a dash of peppermint extract!

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of milk is best for this recipe?

I use whole milk in this recipe, but you can use any type of milk you have on hand. If you want a “healthier” hot chocolate, use 2% or skim milk. It will be less creamy, but with less fat. If you want it very creamy, you can add half and half or even heavy cream.

Can I make more than 2 servings?

This pink hot chocolate recipe is easily half, doubled, tripled, or quadrupled. So, feel free to prepare a small batch or enough to serve at your next party!

Can I add different toppings?

Yes! Marshmallows in hot chocolate are fantastic, as well as any other sprinkles or anything that you think fits well. It is up to you.
