If you’re looking for something a little different for their next party or gathering, these jalapeno popper wontons are a great choice. They are easy to prepare ahead of time and can be reheated before serving, making them perfect for entertaining.

The spiciness from the jalapeno peppers, the smokiness from the bacon, and the tanginess from the cheddar cheese all meld together perfectly to create a flavorful bite-sized appetizer. They can be baked in the oven or the air fryer, and dipped in a delicious sweet chili sauce.

Ingredients You Need

Ingredients for jalapeno popper wontons
  • Cream cheese – Make sure to leave the cream cheese out of the fridge for a little while to make sure it’s softened. It will be way easier to mix when it’s soft.
  • Bacon – Pre-cook and crumble the bacon so it’s ready to be added to the filling.
  • Cheddar cheese – I use sharp cheddar cheese, but this is also very good with pepper jack cheese for an added spicy kick.
  • Jalapeno peppers – You can decide the heat you add to the filling by taking all or most of the seeds and white ribs out of the peppers before you chop them.
  • Garlic powder – You could also use onion powder or a seasoned salt.
  • Wonton wrappers – It’s best to use wonton wrappers, not spring roll or egg roll wrappers.
  • Sweet chili sauce – Thai sweet chili sauce is a great dipping sauce for these, but you could also use Ranch dressing, Sriracha mayo, or an onion dip.
  • Cooking oil – These wontons can be deep fried in hot oil if you want. I like to bake mine so I just brush the oil on lightly so the wrappers crisp up and become golden in color.

How to Make Jalapeno Popper Wontons

Preheat the oven to 400°F (205°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicon baking mat for easy cleanup.

In a medium bowl, stir together the softened cream cheese, bacon, cheddar, and jalapeno peppers. Remember that you can adjust the heat in the filling by how many seeds you leave in the peppers. It can be very spicy, or almost no spice at all if you remove them all.

Arrange the wonton wrappers on a clean surface, like a cutting board or wooden block. Scoop about one teaspoon of the filling in the center of each wrapper. You don’t want to overfill them or the filling will squeeze out the sides and make it difficult for the wrapper to stay closed while baking.

To cook these in the oven, place all of the wontons, spaced out, on the baking sheet. Brush each wonton lightly with cooking oil. Bake for 8 minutes, then flip them over and bake for another 5 minutes, until golden and crispy.

Additional Helpful Tips

  • When handling jalapeno peppers, it’s a good idea to wear gloves to protect your hands from spicy oils. This prevents any discomfort or accidental contact with your eyes.
  • Allow the cream cheese to soften at room temperature before mixing it with other ingredients. This makes it easier to blend and results in a smoother filling.
  • Be careful not to overfill the wonton wrappers with the cream cheese mixture. Too much filling can cause the wontons to burst open while frying.
  • Wonton wrappers can dry out quickly, so cover them with a damp cloth while you work to prevent them from becoming brittle.
  • Offer a variety of dipping sauces like sweet chili sauce, ranch dressing, or sour cream to complement the spicy jalapeno popper wontons.
