A Vodka Gimlet is one of the most simple cocktails you can make. This classic contains only three ingredients – vodka, lime juice, and simple syrup – and it packs a punch.

Vodka Gimlet Cocktail

This drink is a classic for a reason. Not only is it a beautiful drink when served in a coupe glass, it has the ability to transport you right back to the ’20s when this cocktail was a star.

The gimlet started out being made with Rose’s Lime Juice Cordial. It was mixed with two parts gin (Navy strength, even!), and one part Rose’s. Since the cordial is packed with sugar and lime flavoring, the combination was both strong and tasty. No wonder it was so popular.

Why Use Vodka?

Yes, a classic gimlet is made with gin, and it’s fine to stick with that. If it isn’t broke and all… However, a lot of people don’t like gin and its strong juniper profile. Vodka has a less heavy hand in this drink.

Use Fresh Limes & Simple Syrup

While you can still use Rose’s to make your Vodka Gimlet, I really prefer using fresh lime juice and simple syrup. It doesn’t take that much more time to make the simple syrup, and the cocktail turns out so much better with these fresh ingredients.

Simple Syrup Recipe

To make simple syrup, combine one part water and one part granulated sugar in a pot over medium heat. Allow the sugar to melt and cook for about 5 minutes. Then remove it from the heat and let it cool completely.

You can store simple syrup in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it. It keeps for quite a while, so it can be used in other recipes too. I don’t like to make a lot at one time, because it’s easy to make. I use 1/2 a cup water and 1/2 cup sugar.
