Melon and prosciutto pair so well together that there’s no wonder it’s a classic pairing. When you need to make appetizers for a get together or party that everyone will love, these are the go-to.
You can make these skewers in a couple of different ways, so just go with what’s easiest for you. You can use just prosciutto and melon on the skewer, or add on some mozzarella and basil for a simple twist.
What Type of Melon to Use
Cantaloupe is the best type of melon to pair with prosciutto. It has just the right sweetness, texture, and fragrance for the savory, salty meat. Cantaloupe is also less watery than other melons like honey dew melon, so it doesn’t water down the flavor.
You can, however, use honey dew melon or even watermelon, for these skewers. Just keep in mind that the flavor won’t be as concentrated, and the melon will make the skewers more watery, so if they sit out for a while, they’ll become soggy.

Ingredients You’ll Need
- Cantaloupe – Cantaloupe is the best type of melon to pair with prosciutto, however you can use honey dew or watermelon.
- Basil – Fresh basil leaves.
- Mozzarella balls – You can usually find these in the cheese or deli section of the grocery store. Make sure to get the unmarinated cheese.
- Prosciutto – Cut the slices in half so that they aren’t too big of pieces.
- Balsamic glaze – For drizzling. You can use store-bought or try making it at home with this recipe.
How to Make Prosciutto Melon Appetizer Skewers
To assemble these skewers, you’ll need toothpicks, or 3-inch wooden skewers. Thread a piece of prosciutto, a piece of cantaloupe, basil, and mozzarella onto each skewer.
Drizzle with balsamic glaze right before serving. If you don’t plan to serve them right away, you can place them in container for up to a day (if you’ve used cantaloupe). If you’ve used watermelon, it’s not best to store them overnight as the watermelon will begin to lose its water and the prosciutto will soak it up.

If these appetizers might not get eaten right away, I’d suggest holding back half of them in the refrigerator and restocking the plate when it become empty. They’re so much better when chilled.
