Experience the vibrant flavors of Mexico with our refreshing Oaxacan Cocktail! This delightful drink combines the smoky richness of mezcal with the natural sweetness of agave syrup, perfectly balanced by the aromatic freshness of basil leaves. Topped off with a splash of soda water for a fizzy finish, this cocktail is both invigorating and sophisticated.

We first learned how to make this cocktail on a trip to Mexico City. It ended up being our favorite cocktail and we learned how to make it at home so we could enjoy it all the time. The ingredients really matter in this cocktail, so be sure to get the best you can.
Helpful Tips
- Choose Quality Mezcal: The flavor of your cocktail heavily depends on the quality of the mezcal you use. Opt for a premium mezcal that has a smooth finish and distinct smoky notes. This will enhance the overall taste of your cocktail and provide a more authentic experience.
- Fresh Ingredients Matter: Use fresh basil leaves for the best flavor. Gently muddle the basil in the shaker to release its aromatic oils, but be careful not to over-muddle, as this can make the drink bitter. Fresh lime juice can also elevate the cocktail, so consider squeezing it just before mixing for maximum freshness.
- Adjust Sweetness to Taste: The amount of agave syrup can be adjusted based on your personal preference for sweetness. Start with a small amount and taste as you go, adding more if desired. Remember that the soda water will dilute the sweetness slightly, so find the right balance that suits your palate.
