This Spiced Pear Rum Cocktail is the perfect blend of warmth and sweetness, a liquid embodiment of autumn. There’s something magical about the transition from summer to autumn. The crisp air, the golden leaves, and, most importantly, the shift in flavors. I was creating a menu for a dinner party when I decided to throw a few spices into some rum for fun. I had a pear on hand and those flavors are great together, so why not!

That’s how this cocktail came about. I could have used spiced rum, like Sailor Jerry’s, but sometimes it’s more fun to infuse your own.

Ingredients You Need

- Rum – Its best to use a white or silver rum for this cocktail. Clear in color, with a mild flavor and light body. That being said, you can use any rum you like, it will just change the cocktail slightly.
- Pear – You can use whatever pear you like. We used a Bartlett pear. Core removed and thinly sliced.
- Spices – Cinnamon stick, all-spice berries, star anise, cloves, cardamom pods/seeds (any combination).
- Pear juice – Look for pear juice in the juice isle at the grocery store. You can also find pear nectar though it will have a thicker consistency.
- Fresh lemon juice – Fresh squeezed juice always has a better flavor.
- Ice
- Garnish – Slice of pear and sprig of thyme
Equipment
- Sealable jar
- Cocktail shaker
- Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer
- Glass
A Few Notes
- If you’re short on time or prefer a darker hue, spiced rum is a great alternative. However, it’ll give the cocktail a deeper, more intense color.
- The choice of spices is yours. The combination I used provided a balanced warmth without overpowering the delicate pear flavor.
How to Make Spiced Pear Rum Cocktail
Step 1: Infuse the Rum

Begin by pouring the rum into a sealable jar. Add the thinly sliced pear and your chosen spices. I opted for a cinnamon stick, a few cardamom pods, all-spice berries, and a hint of nutmeg for that extra warmth.
Shake the jar for about 30 seconds, then let it sit at room temperature. The 24-hour infusion period allows the rum to marry beautifully with the subtle sweetness of pear and the depth of the spices. You can cut that down to 4 hours, if necessary.

After the infusion time, strain the rum through cheesecloth, squeezing out every drop of this spiced elixir. Now comes the fun part – making the cocktail.
Step 2: Make the Cocktail
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, pour in the infused rum, pear juice, and fresh lemon juice. Shake it vigorously for 15 seconds. The lemon juice adds just the right amount of tartness to balance the sweet and spicy notes.
Strain the contents into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with a fresh slice of pear and a sprig of thyme. The thyme, not traditionally found in cocktails, adds a surprising twist, enhancing the drink’s earthy tones.

This Spiced Pear Rum Cocktail isn’t just a drink; it’s an experience. It’s about embracing the season, enjoying the company of good friends, and savoring each sip as the world transforms around you. Here’s to autumn, to change, and to the simple joys of a well-crafted cocktail. Cheers!
