Helpful Tips

  • Choose Your Furikake Wisely – Furikake comes in many varieties, from seaweed and sesame blends to spicy or wasabi-infused options. Pick one that suits your taste or experiment with different types to find your favorite flavor profile.
  • Toast Sesame Seeds Carefully – Sesame seeds can burn quickly, so keep a close eye and stir frequently while toasting. The aroma is your best indicator—they should smell nutty and fragrant but not smoky.
  • Work Quickly When Mixing – Once you add the marshmallow mixture to the cereal blend, the treats set fast. Have your baking dish ready and press the mixture firmly and evenly before it cools to ensure they hold together well.

Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 1 cup rice crackers hot to mild as you like
  • ½ – 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper to add more spice, if desired
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons black sesame seeds
  • 6 ounces lightly packed mini marshmallows about 3 cups
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup (+2 tablespoons) furikake

Instructions

  • Line a 9”x9” baking dish with parchment paper or lightly grease with oil or butter.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the Rice Krispies and the rice crackers.
  • Pour the sesame seeds into a small pan. Heat on medium for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lightly toasted (you should be able to smell them toasting). Remove them from the pan right away so they don’t continue cooking.
  • In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter. Once fully melted and starting to turn a light golden color, turn off the heat. Immediately pour the marshmallows into the pot and start stirring. Stir continuously until the marshmallows have melted. Add the sesame seeds and stir to combine.
  • Pour the Rice Krispies/Rice Cracker blend into the pot. Top with ¼ cup of the furikake. Quickly stir and fold until everything is combined.
  • Transfer it to the prepared baking dish. Place a small sheet of parchment paper over the cereal mixture and pack the mixture down into the pan. You can also grease your hands to do this, if you want. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the remaining furikake over the top. Let cool for 10 minutes, then pull the entire block of Rice Krispies treats out of the pan and turn it over. Sprinkle on the final 1 tablespoon of furikake.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut the treats into squares.
