Making Rice Krispies Christmas Trees is a wonderful way to bring family and friends together during the holidays. Kids and adults alike can join in the fun, shaping the trees and decorating them with an array of festive toppings.
Whether you choose to use colorful sprinkles, mini candy canes, or edible glitter, each tree can be uniquely designed, allowing everyone to express their creativity. This hands-on activity not only results in delicious treats but also creates cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Helpful Tips
- Use Fresh Ingredients: For the best flavor and texture, ensure your marshmallows and Rice Krispies are fresh. Stale marshmallows can result in a less gooey and chewy texture, while fresh ingredients will help your trees hold their shape better.
- Work Quickly: When mixing the melted marshmallow mixture with the Rice Krispies, work quickly while the mixture is still warm. This will make it easier to shape your trees. If the mixture cools too much, it can become difficult to mold. Consider lightly greasing your hands with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking while shaping.
- Get Creative with Decorations: Use a variety of toppings to make your Christmas trees visually appealing. Consider using colored icing, sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, or edible glitter to create ornaments and garlands. You can also use small candies or fruit slices for the tree topper. Let your creativity shine and personalize each tree for a fun and festive look!

- 6 cups 168 g Rice Krispies cereal
- 1 teaspoon 5 g green food coloring no-taste
- Sprinkles and other decorations
Instructions
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Spray or butter the paper.
- Melt the butter in a large stock pot. Once melted, add the marshmallows and stir constantly until mostly melted.
- Add the food coloring and stir until incorporated. Add more until you reach a dark green color.
- When all the marshmallows are dissolved, take the pot off the heat and add the Rice Krispies.
- Fold the cereal in with a spatula until evenly coated and mixed.
- Pour the mixture onto the baking tray. Put some butter on your hands and pat down the Rice Krispies until uniform and even. Allow to cool for an hour.
- Use a knife or cookie cutter to cut out the trees. Decorate as you like.
Notes
- Use a fresh bag of marshmallows for this recipe. We all have half used bags in the pantry but they will not melt as well. Grab a new bag at the grocery store.
- Try adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the melted marshmallows. It adds more flavor.
- You can coat your fingers or spoon in butter to keep the rice krispies mixture from sticking to your hands while you are pressing it into the baking tray. You can also wet your finger with water and press the mixture into the baking sheet both options should keep your hands clean.
- Add a cup of mini marshmallows to your mixing bowl as you are stirring the cereal into the melted marshmallows. The mini marshmallows will melt and add extra little texture and chewiness.
