Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 1/4 cup basil pesto
  • 2 tablespoon Parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 slice white or yellow cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll out the puff pastry sheet and spread the pesto evenly onto the sheet.
  • Using a pizza wheel, slice through the pastry along the shortest side to make 1” strips.
  • Fold the strips back and forth to make a tree shape. Slide a skewer through the center of the pastry to hold it together.
  • Place the skewers on the baking sheet and bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes, until puffed and slightly golden.
  • Remove from the oven.
  • While the trees are cooling, cut star shapes out of the slice of cheese with a small star cookie cutter. Place the stars on the skewer at the top of the tree.

Notes

  • Work with chilled or even partially frozen pastry to make it easier to cut and shape. Warm pastry can become sticky and lose its structure.
  • This ensures clean cuts for your tree shapes, helping them hold their festive design during baking.
  • A light coating of beaten egg gives the pastry a beautiful golden-brown finish and helps any toppings stick securely.
  • Let the trees cool slightly before adding the cheese star; you don’t want it to melt into a gooey blob.
